More than three quarters of organizations (78%) have started at least one legacy system modernization project in response to the challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic has presented, according to new global research from Advanced.
Our 2021 Mainframe Modernization Business Barometer Report surveyed business and technology employees working for large enterprises with a minimum annual turnover of US$1 billion across the United States and Europe. We found that governments - as well as large organizations across financial services, insurance, healthcare, and logistics industries - are accelerating their modernization projects. 60% say Covid-19 has accelerated their Cloud transition process, and some are even feeling the benefits of mainframe modernization already. More than half (55%) say legacy modernization has helped the business accelerate their digital transformation efforts, crucial in today’s business landscape, while 54% say it has allowed them to be more reactive to market changes – quite a jump from 33% last year.
Our findings also demonstrate that the appetite to modernize is here for the long haul. A large majority (87%) of organizations have scheduled at least one legacy system modernization program in the next 12-24 months. The pandemic has been a pivotal driver of change, and the time to modernize is now.

Research Methodology
The 2021 2021 Application Modernisation Business Barometer Survey was carried out online by Coleman Parkes throughout April and May 2021. The sample comprised 400 people working for large enterprises in the U.S. and Europe with a minimum annual turnover of US$1 billion.
