Our modernisation experts work alongside Google Cloud's consultants to assess, document, and understand your legacy estate. These assessments are performed using ModPaaS and our Assessment services with the goal of developing a complete understanding of the application, infrastructure, and operational components of a mainframe environment. It exposes mainframe artifacts that organisations did not know they had, relationships they did not realise existed, and assets that are no longer in use. An Assessment provides stakeholders with valuable insight to inform application modernisation decisions such as disposition strategies and target environment architectures. It also mitigates cost and risk by highlighting potential challenges and how to overcome them.
To ease the burden of retaining a legacy system, application code, files, and databases can be consolidated into less complex and more widely supported technology stacks using our Application Consolidation and Data Migration solutions. These activities can greatly reduce complexity, licensing costs, and risks associated with finding talent to support obscure langages and data structures. Our Automated Testing solution is used in tandem to further reduce risk, project timelines, and cost. The resulting mainframe estate can then be easily traversed, documented, and analysed using our Enterprise Application Viewer (eav) solution.
In some instances, a retention strategy includes expanding fields or archiving part of the legacy estate. Our Automated Archiving solution allows you retain your legacy source code and data in an easily accessible repository off-mainframe. It also includes tools to efficiently navigate, document, trace, and isolate rules in the archived source code and data.
In some cases, the optimal path to unlocking Google Cloud's AI, ML, and cloud capabilities is through a data first modernisation. Our Data Migration and Replication solutions enable this path and empower true business intelligence by integrating legacy databases still on the mainframe with modern data platforms and API technology. This solution offers automated provisioning, ongoing replication, and confirmation of data between environments. It is non-invasive, does not require a migration, and does not add to your mainframe footprint. It enables holistic visibility and analysis of key operational data which was previously unavailable while reducing MIPS consumption, shifting reporting functionality off mainframe, and providing information to assist future modernisation steps.
Rehosting is ideal for companies whose applications are still meeting their business needs, and who therefore wish to retain their core application development skills while moving away from legacy databases and expensive mainframe infrastructure. Our Rehosting solutions combine the industry’s best software platforms (such as Application Transparency Platform (ATP)) with proven application refactoring, consolidation, and data migration services to ensure your entire mainframe estate is deployed to the target Google Cloud environment in the languages and database models you need. With Rehosting, application source code is migrated to Google Cloud without change while underlying legacy databases are migrated to relational models and configured to seamlessly interact with your applications via the rehosting platform.
Our Automated Refactoring solution provides a turnkey modernisation of your procedural codebase (or 4GL) to object-oriented Java or C# and migration of your legacy database to a relational model, all deployed to Google Cloud so you can retire the mainframe. Many code transformation solutions create structurally similar programs in the target language, but require additional re-engineering efforts to yield desired results. Our solution is completely automated, removing the risk associated with the post-refactoring tweaks that go into other offerings.
Reimagining options allow for the use of most modern technologies, newer design patterns, and improved business logic or removal of residual application source. This modernisation path is best pursued with the visibility, program flows, reporting, and documentation available with ModPaaS, but reimagine can include Automated Refactoring of select subsets of code, Application Consolidation for workloads that may remain on the mainframe, Data Migration to relational models, and Automated Testing.
